A few months ago I came across Christa's work online and fell in love with her goddesses series.
Strong expressive and empowering portraits.I had to invite her to teach on Kabostudio.
Today I want to invite you to know her a little more and present you some of her recent work.
Read until the end for a chance to win a spot in her class;
Explore your inner goddess through mixed media with Christa Forrest
Tell us about your background,
What being apart of an art community means to you?
I thrive off of others, especially their creativity. I enjoy taking art courses from other artists and joining their community - it helps me continue to grow and learn.
Do you ever have creative blocks?
A revelation that made your art go to the next level?
I started out as a landscape artist. I love painting landscapes but I always felt like my art was missing something. I was always uncomfortable with painting faces but decided to take on the challenge and try my best to master it. Something clicked though - my art had meaning, it told a story, there was feeling in it. I finally realized that I found my true journey with painting Goddesses. My art transformed into something rather than a simple painting of a landscape. My style emerged and I finally felt like I found my true focus. I still paint landscapes though....
Do you put a lot of thinking in a new piece, sketch, trial and error before plunging or do you dive head first and work more intuitively?
I find when I create with a plan, it never finishes the way I want it to. I find many of these end of in failure. However, when I approach a painting with an intuitive approach, my work is more successful. I have a general plan of what I want to do but I let the piece tell the story and let it develop as I go along. Many times, the story shifts and moves in a totally different direction and I am ok with that.
An activity or happy unrelated to art that makes you feel good.
What's coming up for you?
Winners are Debbie Rose & Pamela Soaring Raven, Congrats!!!
I was looking to expend Kabostudio's class catalogue and bring something that is both unique and complementary to what I already offer and I believe that this new class does exactly that.
It's my pleasure and honour to present to you the first solo class of Natalie Eslick aka Shady Bower. Natalie is a well develop artist whose skills never cease to amaze me. Her passion for pencil work makes her the perfect teacher to guide you and develop your fundamental drawing skills.
Drawing is a foundational skill that can enhance not only technical and compositional aspects of art in other mediums, such as painting, but is a sensitive, emotive and powerful medium of its own. A finished drawing has the same amount of thought, feeling and effort put into it as any painting, and may take even longer to execute - tiny grey lines working together to create depth of form, value and story. Many of the artists we think of as great masters produced detailed and intricate dry media drawings alongside their paintings, and there has always been a small but powerful band of artists creating incredible work in pencil and graphite, and charcoal and chalk that perhaps don't get the same recognition as painters - yet what is created is no less a glorious piece of art.
For me, the act of drawing, of putting pencil to paper and making tiny scratches of colour, builds a connection with the divine creative, grows my observational, fine motor and imaginative skills, and often results in intentional, finished pieces of art that does not need to move to another medium to be valid.
Registration open on October 18th and the class will go live from November 18th to December 8th.
Each week you will receive three lessons consisting of two developing exercises and one main lesson using a variety of dry media on paper techniques. The supplies list is deliberately kept to a minimum making this a class you can practice anywhere, at any time!

While other kid had the perfect plastic set, I was happier with my made up bed and top notch fashion line clothing made out of old clothes. I remember once I made a complete rock band on stage with guitar and drums out of toilet paper roll and a stack of pastel colored paper a teacher gave me…
Anyhow, that love of creating dolls and characters as never left me and when I saw Lee-Ann paper doll post the first time, I knew they were the perfect fit for Kabostudio. I’m really proud to announce that Lee-Anne has accepted the invitation to teach how she create her paper doll, the infinite possibilities to display them and how to create your own character and accessories.
